Satirical passages of this sort were integral to the texture of the first book, presumably because a five-year-old, even without being raped, can't adequately follow the adult currents around him, yet it's the weakest element of the series. I don't have any real evidence to back this up since my memory is crap, but all I remember is a feeling that I liked the slight tilt the show put on this episode in Patrick's life just a little bit better than the book version. Just to be clear, I'm not giving this book 5 stars, I'm giving the whole Patrick Melrose series 5 stars. Without benefit of that statement the next instalment of the Melrose saga, Bad News, in which Patrick, now in his early 20s and addicted to almost everything, goes to New York to visit his father's body and collect his ashes, might be read as an exercise in nihilistic bravado – a fairly prominent strain in modern British writing, consecrated by Martin Amis in the 1980s and taken up in different ways by younger writers like Will Self and DBC Pierre.

Understandably, we don't see traditionally sexy scenes... but the palpable friction between Khalid and Ayesha as they dance around like two magnets desperate to connect creates a whole new level of non-physical seduction. A good one to read when one's mood stabilzers have kicked in.

I agree that this is a great pick for very young children just getting into books with actual storylines. My major problem with both novels is the presence of a precocious six-year-old boy who, in At Last, debates the nature of consciouness and makes a joke about Osama Bin Laden.

There’s a lot to admire here, even it all of it doesn’t work. It's hard to think of a better series of novels than St Aubyn's Melrose books, and they come to a typically brilliant conclusion in At Last. I just find the cur. Ayesha, on the other hand, is a fiercely independent poet on the rise, who would much rather focus on her career and find a husband on her own than be pressured into a relationship by her gossipy community, just because she's getting older.
Trouble is, Ethan returns from the US where he holds an important research position to organise the conversion of the house into a retreat for families dealing with cancer. Stanley (Richard Jenkins), an aging fast-food worker, plans to call it quits after 38 years on the graveyard shift at Oscar’s Chicken and Fish. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
At Last would work a lot better with genuine chemistry between the leads, and maybe a bit more humor. The title of this final installment in the Patrick Melrose series says everything.

Jenkins’ performance is the reason to see The Last Shift. This is not to judge the sufferers of any kind of violence or abuse. Uzma Jalaluddin's debut novel Ayesha at Last — which reads like an Indian soap opera with a dash of Shakespeare — stands out beautifully in the crowd. Patrick's start in life was more conventionally managed, at least until David, drunk, decided to circumcise him on the kitchen table. This is not to judge the sufferers of any kind of violence or abuse. I found the 4th the weakest of the five, I’m probably in the minority here though. In conventional terms it started with the publication of his first book Never Mind (1992), a bleak satire about privileged people in the 1960s, which won a Betty Trask award.
