Well written account of the 1916 shark attacks along the New Jersey shore which resulted in a number of deaths, no small degree of panic and a frantic bunch of inept amateur shark hunters. It was a very interesting account of the shark attacks of 1916, but it wasn’t one of those books that you couldn’t put down. This book is wonderful because it relates the real story of Jaws, the atmosphere and society at the Jersey shore during the Edwardian Era ( named that in England), the customs, the dress and behavior and attitudes of the elites who vacationed in those luxurious resorts like Asbury Park And Spring Lake. I was never a fan of swimming in rivers, and its doubtful you’ll ever see me in one again after reading this book! I actually read a four-book series after starting this book and then came back and finished it. Not gonna lie I was quite terrified to read this book since I have a huge fear of being attacked by a shark. Very well crafted with interchapters about the shark and the sightings and attacks. Anyhow ,what I liked most about this book was that it was full of Jersey Shore history! (I do love my history) It mentions how the Jersey Shore became a place for rest for people, which hotels they stayed at, how bathing costumes came about etc. Just never happened for me. A nicely written, deeply researched work and un-sensational in its approach, this is a gripping account of a series of shark attacks - most probably by a single `rogue' - along the popular USA beaches frequented by a growing number of people interested in the relatively new idea of public sea-swimming. Will preface this by saying that if you're really interested in this series of events, and want to read what is probably the definitive publication on the Jersey Shore attacks, "Twelve Days of Terror" by Richard Fernicola is the one to read. ( Log Out /  This was a very informative book not only about Great White Sharks, but of the times this story took place back in 1916. The most interesting fact to me was the evidence of the worlds first shark attack dating back to seven hundred years before Christ, found on pottery in the Italian island of Ischia, a place I have been too! Slow, plodding, too much unnecessary information - I never found it to be a fun or interesting read. While the real life shark was not nearly so large as the 25 footer in the movie, the true life events were, in a number of ways, even more incredible than those depicted in the movie including "we're gonna need a bigger boat" but excluding the eating of Robert Shaw.
