Greg Skomal: We now know based on the tagging work we've done the last 10 years is that, when they leave Cape Cod, they go down to Florida, and they spend the time in the Gulf of Mexico. Greg Skomal: You don't know that shark is there. And, you know, people are afraid. Dr. Bob Hueter: No, because we're-- we're monitoring the stress of the animal throughout.
Grey seals, thousands of which now call Cape Cod home. Greg Skomal: And if you're standing there, you don't know that shark's there. Ocearch has put more than 50 of them on Atlantic white sharks, and displays their tracks on its website. This was about 50% of all the recorded Skomal's in the USA. While some scientists criticize the Ocearch techniques as too invasive, they are gathering a lot of data; 17 different research projects will get samples and information from a single shark. In 2011, John was appointed to fill an at-large seat on the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. Greg currently resides with his family on Martha’s Vineyard. Greg Skomal: That's just us. At the age of 16 in 1979, he landed his first job with Bob Lewis, a well-known Miami captain, aboard Kelly Tractor’s boat the Tropicat I. Ray went on to fish with the Kelly Family full time from 1980 until 1999, becoming their captain in 1982. See also. For the population study, DMF partnered with the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. We've seen two or three sharks and no one ever even knew to come look here before. Greg Skomal. But you also live here. And so we can actually track the movements of our white sharks when they leave here.
The DMF is collaborating with several institutions and researchers on white shark studies. The spot tag will send a signal to a satellite each time this shark's dorsal fin comes above the surface of the water. In 1999, Ray started building his own charter business by constructing his first boat the Miss Britt I (named after his oldest daughter). Dr. Bob Hueter: So Bill, just go ahead, go ahead and take your time, just feel how beautiful that is. Bill Whitaker: And that's just you. He has also worked on oyster reef restoration, fish passage and fishery management to rebuild shad and river herring stocks, science-based management of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab fishery, and ecosystem-based management of Atlantic menhaden.
