I hate the prints so much I declined to watch this along with others just as bad. John Phillip Law is better than usual here. The direction,sets,photography are nowhere near as stylish as in a Leone western. That means that there aren't any problems understanding the dialogue when the music or effects kick in. Written by Luciano Vincenzoni (the man responsible for plenty of great Spaghetti Westerns, highlighted of course by The Good, The Bad And The Ugly), Death Rides A Horse may be a fairly basic tale of revenge but it remains a tale well told. Video availability outside of United States varies. I became interested in seeing it again when I heard some of Ennio Morricone's sound track music from it being use in Kill Bill . The score by Morricone is good and elevates the movie. Directed by Giulio Petroni in 1967, Death Rides A Horse, which features an excellent score by Ennio Morricone (parts of which Quentin Tarantino would ‘borrow' for Kill Bill), doesn't reinvent the wheel but it is a more than solid Spaghetti Western highlighted by a great performance from none other than Lee Van Cleef. There's only one survivor of the massacre, a young boy named Bill Meceita. Clearly inspired by the success of Leone's efforts, we get plenty of very wide angles to take in, and then of course the requisite close ups to show off the tension that exists between the characters as the story plays out. Finding a watchable copy of the film in Canada has been a real problem, all of the dvds available are god awful cheesy cheap public domain copies.

So, as you can tell this one star is not for the movie itself, it is for the poor quality that Amazon shamefully pushed off onto us. The movie is nicely paced, never overstaying its welcome even as it closes in on the two hour mark. If you had Death Rides a Horse on one or more bargain Spaghetti Western collections like myself, there's a good chance those copies are washed out, blurry or worse.

More than willing to pay the four men back in kind, Bill's been having trouble tracking down those responsible for the killings. This is the most beautiful transfer of DEATH RIDES A HORSE I've seen.
Morricone's score does a wonderful job of heightening said tension, playing up the drama and the adventure and the tragedy inherent in the storyline. Costumes are nicely handled, the locations where the film takes place look great and the editing Eraldo Da Roma contributes to the production ensures that the film moves quickly and rhythmically. Death Rides A Horse is a hell of a wild ride. The movie is nicely paced, never overstaying its welcome even as it closes in on the two hour mark. This Wild East release is a six-gun salute to quality, with several nice extras. As such, he offers up a track that is as much a critical reading of the film as it is a series of facts and trivia. He does, however, play second fiddle to the perpetually cool Lee Van Cleef (it's probably no coincidence he was cast here, given the film's similarities to Tonino Valerii's classic Day Of Anger). It sports all of the best attributes of a classic Spaghetti Western. It appears to be a copy of a copy of a coply. Couldn't give this full marks because it hasn't one of Ennio Morricone's best musical scores and John Phillip Law is far too wooden as one of the two leading protagonists. The sound is just as bad too. The bad movies she enjoyed ("The Scalphunters," "Wild in the Streets") weren't within a hundred miles of the badness of "Death Rides a Horse," which is a bad movie indeed. I remember enjoying it,however at the time I was a teenager and perhaps easier to please. He offers up some observations about the effectiveness of the direction and the performances, the politics of the film, the quality of the cinematography and score and quite a bit more. Death Rides A Horse might not tell the most original story, but it sure is well made. Unknown to the outlaw, his young companion is one of the murderers! Additionally the disc includes trailers the feature, bonus trailers for For A Few Dollars More, Barquero, The Return Of Sabata, The Mercenary, Valdez Is Coming and Navajo Joe as well as menus and chapter selection. One of Lee Van Cleef's best Italian Westerns, with the usual background players from the Sergio Leone films and John Phillip Law, one of the mid-Sixties' biggest male heartthrobs, at least for a moment or two. You guessed it, revenge. These are both very fine mixes overall.

He does all the things that made him such a great character actor in his day: he's mysterious, he's tough, he's whip smart and he's appropriately dangerous. Shock! There are a few small scuffs and scratches evident here and there but overall the picture is very clean. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon.

Enjoyable spaghetti western with Lee Van Cleef leading the way in the action and acting. Sound quality lacks in some areas but Morricone's soundtrack plays well. But this one has the worst picture quality I have ever seen in my life. Pop!. This was a glossy film made with a reasonable budget. Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2014. I dont think any rating is truly valid considering the above. The start of the movie is not the very beginning, it is cut off. I'm going to chirp in with all the others that have complained about the AV quality. So after finally watching it all these years later, I still think the movie is an enjoyable spaghetti western. It's beautifully shot and nicely put together and it makes the most of its two leading men. Lee Van Cleef is exceptional in Death Rides a Horse. Supporting work from Spaghetti Western regulars Luigi Pistilli and Anthony Dawson is also noteworthy, but the two stars are the ones that deliver the most memorable material.
Death Rides A Horse is presented on Blu-ray in 2.35.1 widescreen (not 1.85.1 as is mistakenly stated on the back cover) in an AVC encoded 1080p high definition transfer on a 50GB disc with the transfer taking up roughly 28GBs of space. Spaghetti western. Better than your average spaghetti, circa 1967. As Ryan, Van Cleef is at the top of his game. I'd love to see a good quality version. So bad that i think this could damage the eyes as well as give major headache. It's got action, humor, wrapped up in a solid revenge thriller. Petroni pervades his movie with an autumnal melancholic feel that … Lee Van Cleef, as always, is great to watch. Kino's Blu-ray is a good one, presenting the film in very nice shape and with a genuinely interesting audio commentary from Alex Cox. The production values in the picture are impressive. The increase in detail is frequently very impressive when compared to what DVD could provide while texture and depth are strong throughout as well. When the movie beings, a quartet of murderous thieves slaughter a family and make off with a sizeable chunk of cash for their efforts. It's pan and scan and possible some of the worst quality I've seen since flood salvaged VHS. A highly-regarded second-tier Spaghetti western, this one stands out to me for several reasons, but first and foremost the clever braiding of two Western archetypes into one narrative thread.
Well most of the principals in the film appear to be speaking English so for that reason, and the fact that the English track features Van Cleef's real voice, it's the preferable way to watch the movie. Death Rides a Horse marks my very first foray into the spaghetti western genre outside of the relative safety of Sergio Leone's better known movies, and while it's not quite on a par with the Leone classics, the film is still a solidly entertaining adventure that certainly can't be accused of not trying Between the film's brutal, rain-lashed opening massacre and its wind-swept gun-fight finalé, Death Rides A Horse delivers … Not a Leone film but Ennio Morricone did the score and Lee Van Cleef is his usual self. Select the department you want to search in. Two men, one old and experienced, one young and green, both crack shots, find a common reason to work together to shoot lots of baddies.
There is no evidence of any noise reduction or edge enhancement nor are there any compression artifacts. Things get complicated when Ryan realizes that they're after the same prize and makes it clear to Bill that he intends to take care of this on his own, and for his own reasons….
